The Best Roadside Service to use When Your Truck Breaks Down

2/27/2019

One of the worst things that will happen during a tour is the tour truck suddenly breaks down. When that happens, you may have a designated roadside assistance service to contact (AAA, Penske, Enterprise). However, I highly recommend also keeping these two truck services locator links available onhand at all times:

I have used them at all times of day and night to quickly find a nearby repair shop for tires, liftgate malfunction, engine problem, and running lights going out. On one occasion they were even able to quickly locate and send a mobile mechanic unit to a field in the middle of the night to fix an onboard generator on my trailer.

With higher labor costs, 3D Exhibits is the West Coast fabricator on this list. They are located in Las Vegas, Nevada, and specialise in builds for tradeshows and conventions. They have also created unique builds for brand experiences, such as the pod for the Share-A-Coke tour.

1. Trucker Path
https://truckerpath.com
The ultimate app for driving commercial vehicles. You can easily plug in your route and search for weigh stations, truck stops, hotels with truck parking, rest areas, truck washer, and other useful places for trucking needs.

2. CoPilot GPS
https://copilotgps.com/
The best navigation mobile app for commercial vehicles. This is a paid app with subscription options of $9.99/month or $99.99 for the whole year. The map data can be downloaded directly to the device, so it will function even when there is no cellular data in the area.

3. Expensify
https://www.expensify.com/
Perfect tool for keeping track of all your expense receipts. Very easy to use and can be linked with the tour credit card to automatically list the expenses as charges are made.

4. CamScanner
https://www.camscanner.com
Turn your mobile phone into a scan machine. Just open the app, take a picture of the page(s), and the document will be converted into a PDF ready to email. Excellent tool for scanning contracts, expense reports, and other tour paperwork.

5. Planet Fitness
https://www.planetfitness.com/
Had to throw this one in there. Tour life can be physically and mentally exhausting. Staying healthy is critical for a tour manager's longevity. For $20/month you get access to over 1,600 locations. Most are 24/7 and are located in large shopping centers with parking for oversized vehicles.
